The stems are the assembly. Semi-handmade construction means the branches are attached individually rather than pressed as one unit, so you position each stem to open the silhouette out - which is also what lets you fit it against a wall or leave it full in the round.
Does it need any maintenance?
Dust the leaf, and re-seat any stem knocked out of line. PP holds its colour indoors and does not shed, so unlike a live magnolia there is no leaf sweep, no drop and no seasonal bare period to design around.
